BOM predicts bitter chills and rain for Melbourne as polar frost sweeps through Victoria

Parts of Victoria have shivered through the coldest night of the year – with little respite from the cold snap on the forecast.

The Bureau of Meteorology on Wednesday said temperatures overnight in Mount Hotham fell as low as -5C.

In Ballarat, the overnight low was -2C and in Horsham -1C.

The overnight low in the city itself was a frosty 7C.

The chill is the result of a cold front sweeping through the state.

It’s forecast to bring showers to Melbourne every day from Thursday through to Monday, meaning Anzac Day processions could require umbrellas.

“A cold front crossing the Southern Ocean is forecast to reach the far south west late tonight before crossing the rest of the state on Thursday,” BOM said.
